Why Dental Implants May Be Right for You Dr. Collier and Several Patients Discuss Implants

Countless people in various stages of their lives have benefited from getting dental implants. These artificial tooth roots can support crowns for singe-tooth replacement, bridges for multiple missing teeth, and a set of dentures for full-arch replacement. During a free consultation at our practice in Cordova, TN, our team will assess your candidacy for implants and develop a custom treatment plan that's right for you.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Prevents Bone Loss

Since dental implants are anchored into the jawbone, they give the bone tissue something to support. This prevents bone atrophy around a tooth gap and along the dental arch.

Stability Without Denture Adhesives or Creams

A removable denture can slip out of place while eating or speaking. Dentures held in place with dental implants are stable, which eliminates the need for dental adhesives and creams.

Improved Dental Health and Function

With implants in place, you can bite, chew, and speak normally. You'll be able to enjoy your favorite foods again and speak without struggling to form certain words.

Excellent Aesthetics

Custom implant restorations are designed to closely resemble the look of natural teeth. Our goal is to make the restorations appear so lifelike that no one notices you've undergone dental work.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are prosthetic tooth roots that are surgically placed in the jawbone. Once the implants have fused with the jaw tissue, they provide dentures, crowns, and bridges with virtually the same level of stability as natural teeth. That means you can eat any foods you like, speak clearly, and smile with pride, knowing that your replacement teeth will not shift out of place.

I am so pleased with my implants. Dr. Collier is excellent and has great bedside manner. His staff and his assistants are awesome. He wanted everything to be perfect even if that meant having an extra visit. I was very impressed with his credentials when I was doing my research for an implant specialist and I’m glad that I chose Southern Dental Implant Center.

I had a great experience at Southern Dental.  I was able to get my implant done in one day. The second day I had a flipper made so I wouldn't be seen with a hole in my mouth. All the staff were very courteous and helpful.  Office was easy to find, good parking, nice big sign out front, and very comfortable.  I highly recommend this dental center if you need an implant.

Free Initial Consultation

During a free initial consultation in Cordova, Dr. Collier will determine the extent of your tooth loss and discuss your dental health goals. He can review all of the risks and benefits of getting dental implants, and even go over possible dental implant alternatives. We want you to make an informed and confident decision about your treatment options.

Implant Placement

During the first oral surgery, dental implants are placed in the jaw. Your doctor will precisely place each post so that it heals properly and provides optimal support to the finished crown, bridge, or denture.

Osseointegration

The first healing period in the dental implant process will take about three to six months. During this time, the jawbone and implant fuse together. The procedure can move forward only when this process is complete.

Placing the Abutment

A second oral surgery is needed to place an abutment on the top of each post. The abutment is what connects the implant to the finished restoration. Your doctor will make an incision in the gum tissue to expose the implant and secure the abutment.

Second Healing Period

The second healing period is much shorter since it only requires the gums to heal. Full recovery only takes a few weeks. Once healing is complete, the abutment remains accessible above the gumline, ready for your dentist to attach your restoration.

Making Your Dental Prosthesis

The crown, bridge, or denture is custom fabricated in our state-of-the-art in house lab. We ensure the appliance matches the appearance and strength of your natural teeth.

Placing the Implant Restoration

The final step of the process is placing the finished crown, bridge, or denture. Dr. Collier can make final adjustments as needed for proper comfort and fit. Once your restoration is ready, your dentist will secure it to the abutment.

What Are Dental Implants Made Of? Implant Materials and Why They Matter

Biocompatible Materials

To ensure osseointegration occurs, implant materials are biocompatible. That simply means the material will not be rejected by your body's living tissue.

Titanium

For many years, titanium has been the go-to material for dental implants. In fact, scientists learned that titanium was biocompatible by accident. During the 1960s, Dr. Per-Ingvar Brånemark (the father of modern dental implantology) learned that titanium can fuse with bone during a microscopy study involving rabbits.

Zirconia

Materials have come a long way in recent decades. In addition to titanium, it's possible to get dental implants made of zirconia. Zirconia dental implants are completely white, which can improve the appearance of your smile. They are also metal-free, which is ideal for people with metal allergies or sensitivities.
