When a tooth or multiple teeth are missing, it is important to address this loss before it has a greater impact on the health of surrounding teeth and the structure of the jaw. While there are many restorative dentistry treatments to replace missing teeth, none offer the benefits of dental implants. Dental implants are the most secure and durable restorative dental treatment and they most closely function as the natural teeth. This is because dental implants fuse with the jaw bone and act as a replacement for the entire tooth, including its root, whereas most dental fabrications only replace the crown of the tooth. While dental implants are a superior restorative treatment and are extremely beneficial, Dr. Jason Collier further extends those benefits by offering patients zirconia dental implants. For many of our Memphis patients, zirconia dental implants benefits are so numerous that they opt for these implants over traditional titanium implants.

What Are Zirconia Dental Implants?

When describing the implant itself, we are actually referring to the anchor for a dental fabrication. A dental implant is surgically placed in the jaw bone where it will fuse with the jaw bone and connective tissue. Traditionally, a dental implant is a tiny titanium screw. While traditional dental implants are effective, we are now able to offer zirconia dental implants. Zirconia implants are also tiny screws, but they are made of white ceramic materials. Like titanium, zirconia is biocompatible, so it will effectively fuse with the jaw bone.

Benefits of Zirconia Implants

A traditional dental implant that is composed of titanium consists of two main parts. There is the actual implant that is placed in the jaw bone (known as the post), and then an abutment that is attached to the titanium post once the gum has healed and the implant has had time to fuse with the jaw.

One of the benefits of zirconia dental implants is that the post and abutment can be fabricated as one piece. As far as a patient’s oral health goes, the benefit of this is that there are no prosthetic connections where bacteria can hide and grow.

The second benefit that zirconia implants offer to patients over titanium implants is that the posts and abutment are white in color. This eliminates the chance that any metal or gray color will be seen while a patient laughs or smiles. Even if restorations begin to wear down over time, no metal implants will ever be seen through the teeth.

A final benefit of zirconia implants is that they will not corrode. While dental implants are meant to last a lifetime, because titanium is a metal, there is a chance that corrosion will occur. The ceramic materials used in zirconia implants are not susceptible to this potential problem.
