Over time, you are likely to experience tooth loss. There are numerous treatments for missing teeth, but implant dentistry remains one of the most effective options. Dental implants can anchor a crown, bridge, or denture like natural tooth roots, allowing you to bite and chew normally. Dr. Jason Collier has helped countless patients in the Memphis, TN area have healthy, beautiful smiles again.

The team at Southern Dental Implant Center would like to consider some interesting numbers related to tooth loss and implant dentistry. This should help you understand why dental implants are so popular and considered quite effective in treating varying degrees of tooth loss.

Statistics on Tooth Loss

According to findings by the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP), approximately 178 million Americans are missing at least one tooth. In addition, the ACP also estimates that 40 million Americans are missing all of their teeth.

Common Causes of Missing Teeth

A 2012 study published in the International Journal of Dentistry examined the most common reasons for tooth extraction in a Brazilian dental clinic. While the clinic may have been in South America, the findings nonetheless match the most common causes of tooth loss in the United States:

Numbers on Age and Tooth Loss

Statistics have found that tooth loss and age are interrelated. The older a person is, they are more likely to be missing teeth.

These numbers from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) highlight the link between the aging process and tooth loss. (Note: An average mouth without wisdom teeth has 28 teeth total.)

The NIDCR also estimates that 10.13 percent of Americans aged 50-64 are missing all of their teeth.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that roughly 13 percent of Americans age 65-74 have no teeth remaining; that number increases to 26 percent among Americans age 75 and older.

Numbers on Dental Implants

The American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) estimates that 3 million people in the United States have at least one dental implant in place. Statistica estimated that the market for dental implants accounts for $1.4 billion.

Success Rates of Dental Implants

The success rate of dental implants is quite high. According to numbers in the Journal of Oral Implantology, the overall success rate of dental implants is 98 percent.

A study published in Acta Odontologica Scandinavica tracked patient satisfaction over the course of 8-14 years, and reveals continued patient satisfaction over time. Of the 400 respondents to the survey, 94 percent were satisfied with the cosmetic outcomes of dental implants and 81 percent experienced good chewing comfort with their dental implants. However, 32 percent of patients did report some complications and issues over time. Overall, the patient satisfaction rate remained high.
