Am I a Good Candidate For Porcelain Veneers?

Most people who are self-conscious of their smile are good candidates for dental . However, there are a few factors that can affect your candidacy.

Sufficient Tooth Enamel

Before dental are placed, a portion of your tooth's enamel has to be removed to create space for your new restorations. Patients wanting dental will need enough enamel left over so the veneer can be bonded to the tooth.

Good Oral Health

Patients wanting this cosmetic dentistry procedure should be in good oral health. Those suffering from other dental issues like tooth decay or gum disease will need to have those problems treated before can be placed.

Minor Misalignment Issues

Slightly crooked, gapped, or overcrowded teeth can be easily addressed through . However, severely misaligned teeth will need to be seen by an orthodontist prior to veneer placement.

Good Oral Hygiene

Once are placed, they can be cared for just like your natural teeth. Patients should already be in the habit of brushing twice daily, flossing once daily, and coming in for routine checkups twice a year before getting dental .

Free of Bruxism

Patients needing should not grind their teeth (called bruxism). While the porcelain shells are incredibly durable, they are not indestructible. Bruxism can cause your new restorations to chip, crack, and wear down.

We Also Offer Lumineers A No-Prep Veneer Option

Lumineers are a great option for patients who wish to transform their smile without diminishing the integrity of their natural teeth. Because porcelain require the removal of a layer of tooth enamel, they are a permanent change to your teeth. Lumineers do not require this preparation of the natural tooth and can later be removed. This makes them a great option for patients who are hesitant about making permanent changes to address minor dental concerns. However, Lumineers are not as durable as porcelain and only last around 5-7 years with proper care. Reach out to our dental office to learn more about your cosmetic dentistry options.

Make Your Veneers Last Care Tips for Longevity

Unlike resin bonding, porcelain are incredibly durable and, with proper care, can last for more than 10 years.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Porcelain should be cared for just like your natural teeth. You should still brush twice daily, floss once daily, and visit our Memphis and the Mid-South area office twice a year for routine cleanings to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Avoid Biting Hard Surfaces

While your are more durable than resin bonding, they are not indestructible. You should avoid biting your nails, chewing on ice, or opening packaging with your teeth as this can damage your restorations.

Avoid Grinding Your Teeth

If you suffer from bruxism, talk with one of our dentists about being fitted for an oral appliance. This can help protect your restorations from the wear and pressure teeth grinding puts on them.
