The results available from cosmetic dentistry procedures continue to improve as new technology emerges and the procedures are refined. Learn about some of the most common questions and concerns people have about cosmetic dentistry, and then talk to your dentist if you think that you could benefit from such procedures.

Q: Who is a good candidate?

A: There are many types of cosmetic dentistry procedures, and each addresses a different problem such as discolored teeth, crooked or crowded teeth, or missing or broken teeth. You would need to visit a cosmetic dentist to determine which type of procedure, if any, would be right for you.

In general, an ideal candidate for most types of cosmetic dentistry procedures must have good dental health, have a fully developed mouth, not be pregnant and be a non-smoker.

Q: Are there serious risks involved with cosmetic dentistry procedures?

A: There are some risks involved with most types of dental procedures but, for most cosmetic dentistry, the risks are minimal. The risk of infection is a concern with some procedures, but this risk can be greatly minimized by simply following the doctor’s orders before and after the procedure.

Q: How do I choose a cosmetic dentist?

A: The best way to know that you are seeing a qualified cosmetic dentist is by asking your regular dentist for referrals. You also want to know how long the dentist has been performing the procedure that you are considering.

Take a look at his portfolio of patients. If you do not like the results that you see, you should find another dentist. Also, make sure to verify that the book contains photos of his work and not general photos of the procedure.

Q: What kind of results can I expect?

A: Having a realistic expectation of the results that you can expect is very important. Make sure you have a discussion about this with your dentist prior to making a decision to go through with the procedure. In most cases, you can expect improvement, but not perfection. Knowing exactly what you expect will reduce the chances that you will be disappointed with your results.

Q: Can I have a smile just like my favorite celebrity?

A: In general, the answer to this question is no. For example, some patients want to know if they have Angelina Jolie’s smile, but they fail to take into consideration that they do not have her facial features. Not only would it be impossible to fit her smile into every mouth, it would look ridiculous in many cases.

The point of cosmetic dentistry is to help you have the best smile for you. It is not to make you look like someone else.
